The AI Adventures of Demonic Furry Dolphin

The AI Adventures of Demonic Furry Dolphin was an experimental webcomic written by Lucio Luiz using some of the earliest publicly available versions of DALL-E. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where only AI-generated creations survive, it followed the absurd, self-aware misadventures of a demonic furry dolphin — with artwork that was deliberately rough on purpose, poking fun at the AI image generators of the time (far more limited than what exists today) rather than trying to pass them off as good art.

Each four-panel strip started as a script written entirely by Lucio Luiz, who then wrote the image prompts, adapted the dialogue to whatever the AI actually produced (leaning into its mistakes rather than fighting them), and finally added the speech bubbles and captions by hand, on purpose badly lettered. One of the running jokes was that the main character could never keep the same look from one panel to the next — the AI simply couldn’t manage consistency, and the strip made that failure part of the punchline.

Published weekly on Fridays between October 18, 2022 and January 15, 2023, the series ran for 11 episodes. Lucio had a full story arc already scripted, with recurring jokes and other AI systems to poke fun at, but chose not to continue: as AI image generation quality improved rapidly, the joke behind the strip’s whole premise started losing its edge, and he had no interest in using AI as if it were an actual artist — only as a target for satire.
